Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is the technology at the heart of all services provided by Cross Library. In short its goal is to match a user query in a source language with documents written in a language different from the source language. Such a result is achieved a process of query translation.

Query translation is at the heart of Cross Library solutions. Thanks to the research carried on in the CACAO project and to the resources developed by Cross Library partners over more than a decade, our technology achieves the difficult task of bridging queries from one language to another. This is possible thanks to the following technologies/resources:

  • General purpose, high coverage bilingual dictionaries.
  • Domain specific bilingual dictionaries.
  • Possibility to plug in bilingual dictionaries delivered by the customer.
  • Vector based semantic disambiguation on both the source and on the target languages.
  • Named entity recognition.
  • Subject heading based cross language mapping.
